Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In one of Niantic's most famous glitches, Moltres was briefly released to the world as not a typical T5, but a T4 raid. In 2018, Moltres became the first legendary players could conceivably solo in this way - but only if you had a team full of a particularly powerful Rock type. What Rock type offered the performance needed to solo this raid?

Answer: Tyranitar

Tyranitar was fresh off of a Community Day where it received Smack Down for a Fast move, allowing it to properly be a Rock attacker. In this role, it vastly outclassed Golem and, because Rhydon and Aerodactyl did not have the moves to be Rock attackers, Tyranitar was the king of the Rock type by a mile.

It was ever so barely strong enough to solo Moltres if a full team of six was packed for the occasion, and it stood alone in this regard.
2. Rhyperior was neck and neck with Tyranitar for the longest time in terms of Rock performance, but its Community Day let it pull far, far ahead. What is Rhyperior's Community Day move?

Answer: Rock Wrecker

Rock Wrecker is an extremely powerful two barred Charge move that is also incredibly fast. It's a fantastic move that let Rhyperior pull far ahead of Tyranitar and match the ridiculous DPS of Rampardos, while being far tankier.
3. The sixth generation Mythical Pokemon Diancie was released initially in 2023, then came back for another go in 2024. It was outfitted with a great Rock moveset, letting its Mega form put in work. Which Rock move of the following does Diancie learn?

Answer: Rock Slide

With a simple moveset of Rock Throw + Rock Slide, Diancie's Mega offered the highest DPS out of any Rock Mega in the game by quite a substantial amount; even a Mega Diancie at level 40 offers more Rock DPS than a Mega Tyranitar or Mega Aerodactyl at level 50!

Sadly, Diancie's non-Mega form simply lacks the stats to be effective outside of a PvP context. Even still, its Mega was quite a rousing success.
4. Terrakion hit the ground running as being quite the force as a Rock attacker. However, it would not remain a one-trick pony for long as its second appearance in raids saw it come to players with a brand new Fighting move. What move?

Answer: Sacred Sword

Sacred Sword is a ridiculously powerful and blindingly fast two-barred Charged move. Combined with Terrakion's excellent stats, it became the #1 Fighting attacker in the game by quite a long shot, even beating out other notoriously powerful pugilists such as Shadow Machamp and Aura Sphere Lucario.

Of course, Terrakion could always equip Smack Down + Rock Slide to be an excellent Rock attacker as well.
5. Entei, as a Fire type, is weak to Rock, which would likely entice players to use Rock against it in a raid. However, Entei has some tricks up its sleeve that these rugged combatants would do well to take heed of. Which coverage move of the following can Entei learn, to hit Rock types super effectively?

Answer: Iron Head

Iron Head is especially dangerous if you choose to use Mega Diancie, as Mega Diancie is 4x weak to Steel. In addition to Iron Head, Entei can use Scorching Sands to deter Rock types with, though Mega Aerodactyl in particular wouldn't be bothered by this due to its Flying typing. Rock types can work and potentially even quite well, but they are noticeably riskier to rely on than Water types.
6. Shuckle is notorious as a Tier 3 Raid Boss. Tier 3 bosses are usually relatively doable to even easy for some players to solo. How difficult is Shuckle to defeat, without a friend to help?

Answer: Impossible

It is not possible to defeat Shuckle without the help of another player, and Shuckle is unique for being the only Tier 3 to ever make that claim. Even a max level Primal Kyogre boosted by rainy weather, or a maxed Shadow Metagross with Meteor Mash in snowy weather fail to come close to having the DPS needed to pull this off. And because Shuckle is extraordinarily weak, its attacks do pitiful damage and raiders will barely generate any energy off its attacks, slowing down their DPS even more.

Because Shuckle's Defense stat is so high, and its HP is unbelievably low, it benefits more off of having the latter get buffed than any other boss the game has ever seen. This explains why it cannot be beaten alone, even by a max level trainer with the best possible Pokemon in optimal weather.
7. Mega Tyranitar is another notable Rock type Raid boss, coming to gyms semi-frequently as a Tier 4 Mega boss. Is it possible to solo Mega Tyranitar?

Answer: Yes

In a humorous twist, it is impossible to defeat the lowly Shuckle alone, but the brutally powerful Mega Tyranitar is ironically quite simple to beat alone, despite being a lot more intimidating. Compared to Shuckle, Tyranitar has less Defense, a 4x weakness to Fighting, and players get 120 more seconds to beat Mega Tyranitar than they do Shuckle. Pokemon definitely has its moments, alright...
8. Aggron in its regular form is a Steel/Rock type. When Mega evolving, it drops the Rock type and is pure Steel. Despite this, can Mega Aggron buff Rock types?

Answer: No

Because it sheds its Rock typing, Mega Aggron is only capable of buffing Steel types, not Rocks. Another example of a similar experience popping up is with Mega Charizard X- it is only capable of buffing Fire and Dragon because it swaps Flying out for Dragon when Mega Evolving.
9. Bosses which are Tier 4s, and not Tier 4 Megas, give the player much less time to defeat them. As such, soloing these monsters can be quite a bit more difficult. Ninjask is 4x weak to Rock, naturally prompting adventurous players aiming for the solo to pack their Rhyperiors, Rampardos, and perhaps Tyranitars. Can T4 Ninjask be defeated alone?

Answer: Yes

This is actually quite an easy raid, especially by Tier 4 standards. A maxed team of any Rock type mentioned in the question can solo this raid as low as level 35, and the endeavor becomes extremely easy if they're all level 50.
10. Rock types are mainly known for their offensive prowess. Which Rock type of the following offers the best peak DPS?

Answer: Mega Diancie

Mega Diancie has amazing stats and the powerful standard of Rock Throw + Rock Slide for a moveset, letting it put in work. It's particularly powerful against Fire types which have Dragon moves, such as Mega Charizard X or Reshiram, due to its part Fairy typing.

This Fairy typing does make Diancie worse at beating some bosses such as Entei or Ho-Oh, however, as they can pack Steel type moves that will do a ton of damage to it.
