Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song is the first song sung solo by Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) in Act 1?

Answer: "The Wizard and I"

"The Wizard and I" is the first song sung solo by Elphaba in Act 1. Madame Morrible tells Elphaba that someday her skill of using magic might land her in the position of helping the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
2. Who shows up at Shiz University and disrupts the flow of the students?

Answer: Fiyero

Fiyero is the hunky prince of Winkie Country. He comes to Shiz after being kicked out of other schools for his lack of smarts.
3. What song tells how Galinda and Elphaba hate each other? Choose the official and final name of the song.

Answer: "What Is This Feeling"

"What Is This Feeling" is the song. It's also referred to as "The Loathing Song", but "What Is This Feeling" is its proper name. The working title of the song (when it was being written) was "Bad Situation", but this was later changed to "What Is This Feeling". In this song, Elphaba and Galinda sing the phrase "unadulterated loathing" many times.
4. In which song does Galinda sing about what's important to her, and about how she can help Elphaba?

Answer: "Popular"

"Popular" shows Galinda's true character since she is the most popular, but not the smartest, girl at Shiz. Elphaba and Galinda actually start to like each other after this. Galinda also becomes nicer, trying to accept Elphaba for who she is.
5. What song ends Act 1 with a bang of wickedness?

Answer: "Defying Gravity"

At the end of Act 1, Elphaba has run from the Wizard, taking his book of magic spells, because he made her use her powers for evil. Then she tells Glinda - who has changed her name - that they need to rebel against the Wizard, who is evil. Glinda starts to go for it, then decides she can't do it. Guards start to break down the door and Elphaba enchants a broom to levitate.

She then exiles herself from the other people, thus becoming the Wicked Witch of the West.
6. In Act 2, which song starts off the celebration of Glinda and Fiyero's engagement, which Fiyero doesn't know about?

Answer: "Thank Goodness"

"Thank Goodness" is the song that starts off Act 2. By now, Glinda is known as "Glinda the Good" and Elphaba is "The Wicked Witch of the West." Glinda is at a celebration surrounded by Ozians, and then tells Fiyero they're engaged, though Fiyero had no say in it.
7. Who does Fiyero end up falling for?

Answer: Elphaba

Yeah, it's weird, huh? Fiyero ends up falling for Elphaba, and this makes Glinda mad. In Act 2, the Witches get into a catfight - yes, a catfight, slapping and all. Anyway, Nessa falls for Boq, a Munchkin. Nessa is also known as the Wicked Witch of the East.
8. Who ends up becoming the Tin Woodman (the Tinman)?

Answer: Boq

Boq is in love with Glinda, but Glinda insists that he ask Nessa out to earn Glinda's love. Nessa gets the wrong message and thinks that Boq actually loves her; in Act 2, she takes away the rights of Munchkins, so that she can keep Boq with her. Elphaba comes back to Nessa to help her, then Boq thinks Nessa doesn't need him, and Nessa uses a spell that almost kills him. Elphaba finally saves him by turning him to tin.
9. What is the final, official name for the last song Glinda and Elphaba sing together before the play ends?

Answer: "For Good"

This is a very sad song: Elphaba tells Glinda it is time for her to surrender, and that she gives up. She has lost everything dear to her, everything but Glinda. Elphaba says Glinda must try to carry on Elphaba's deeds, and must not try and clear her name. Glinda tells her that she doesn't understand, but she will do what her best friend wants.

They say good-bye and we see the melting scene.
10. Does Elphaba really melt?

Answer: No

No, Elphaba doesn't melt, it is all an illusion, so Elphaba and Fiyero can be together without being caught, for they are both fugitives. They never could be together if the biggest threat to the Wizard was still alive, so now everyone thinks "The Witch is Dead!" and they flee to the Badlands of Oz.
