Vientiane is the capital and largest city of Laos. It is located on the Mekong River and the border with Thailand. The city is the economic center of Laos and has a population of over one million.
2. In 1953, Laos gained independence from which of these countries?

Answer: France

Laos was under the control of France from 1893 through 1953. During that time, it was first the French Protectorate of Laos and then a territory of French Indochina. Laos gained its independence on October 22, 1953. This was made official with the signing of the Geneva Accords of 1954.
3. What shape is found in the center of Laos' flag?

Answer: circle

The flag of Laos has three horizontal stripes. The top and bottom stripes are red, representing the blood shed while fighting for independence. The middle stripe is blue for the Mekong River. In the center is a white circle, symbolizing the unity of the Lao people as well as the full moon. This design was made the official national flag in 1975.
4. What is the most popular religion practiced in Laos?

Answer: Buddhism

Over 60% of Lao people practice Theravada Buddhism. The Pha That Luang, or Golden Stupa, is a symbol of the country. Many other beautiful Buddhist shrines are found throughout the country. The second most popular religion in Laos is the Tai folk religion.
5. Laos had won a gold medal in their very first Olympic Games.

Answer: False

Laos first sent athletes to the 1980 Olympics hosted in Moscow, Russia. They did not win any medals. Up to the 2020 games in Tokyo, they still had not medaled. Perhaps they would stand a chance if their national sport, Muay Lao, a form of martial arts, was added to the Games.
6. Is Laos a landlocked country?

Answer: Yes

Laos is the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by five countries: Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. Its longest border is with Vietnam to the east.
7. What is the name of the currency used in Laos?

Answer: kip

The Lao kip has been used since 1955. The name is derived from the Lao word for ingot. The kip banknotes are very colorful and feature scenes of Lao history and culture.
8. In Laos, what is Phou Bia?

Answer: a mountain

Found in the Xaisomboun Province, Phou Bia is the highest point in Laos. The mountain peak reaches an elevation of 9,245 feet. The mountain is remote and covered in jungle terrain.
9. Known as the Asian unicorn, which of these endangered animals is found in Laos?

Answer: saola

The saola, also known as the spindlehorn (because of its long curved horns) or Asian unicorn, is a bovine and the only member of the genus Pseudoryx. They are called unicorns because of how rare they are. The IUCN has them classified as critically endangered.

They were officially discovered in 1992 and their population is unknown due to their elusive nature. Saolas live in the Annamite Mountain Range in Laos and Vietnam.
10. The Lao New Year is celebrated in January.

Answer: False

Lao New Year, or Pi Mai, is celebrated for three days in April. Water, often perfumed with flower petals, is important during this holiday. It is used to wash houses and Buddha statues. It is also poured or splashed on elders, monks, friends, and even strangers walking by. Since April is the hottest time of the year in Laos, a water fight is a fun way to celebrate and wash away the bad luck of the previous year. Parades, dancing, and other activities take place as well.
