Answer:

The state song of Ohio has a much longer history than the 1969 date would suggest, but until the late 1960s we had no official state anthem. The original song is based on the classical composer, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "Song of the Indian Guest" and also on "Beautiful Dreamer" by Stephen Foster. The lyrics were written in 1918 and it was first recorded by Robert King as a piece of popular music. It was intended to be the background music for a waltz.

The original song was supposed to be about a man (?) in his later years remembering a canoe trip he took down the Ohio River with a lover. The trip ended with the beginning of his love for the woman and him reminiscing about the love he once knew. Except for the fact that the second-to-last line of the song mentions Ohio, it really doesn't have much to do with the state.

It looks like some of our legislators recognized this problem in the late 80s and decided to rectify it. We got the far superior (in my opinion) version that we have now which talks about our cities, factories, and farms. However, the original version is the one that still gets more play at the state fair and football games.

Oh well, at least we can all agree on the official state rock song of Ohio, "Hang on Sloopy"...(actually I think "Cleveland Rocks" is better)
