    Have there ever been any official air hockey tournaments?

    		Yes.

    It seems to be a well organized game or sport. There are state championships, or at least in California, Texas and Chicago as indicated by the links below. There is even a World Championship.
    So, yes, there have been official tournaments. I'm still not sure whether to call it a game or a sport, though.
