    		English Channel en français = La manche.

    Manche - e + ot = manchot

    Manchot is French for penguin or one-armed person (as in the one-armed man relentlessly sought by The Fugitive, Dr. Richard Kimble.)

    		Oui! Pete, probably standing on the white cliffs of Dover is staring across La Manche to the French coast, probably at Cap Gris Nez. And as you said, manchot is French for penguin or the adjective for a one-armed person. Bien joué!
