After erecting it, the benefactress of this gate to a center of learning took down 8 controversial marble panels despite her own objection. What convinced her?

    Question #100446. Asked by edmund80. (Oct 22 08 9:20 PM)

Sather Gate at University of California, Berkeley.

The eight panels depicted four nude males and four nude females representing diferent forms of higher learning.

"One contemporary observer went so far as to describe the male nudes as being ithyphallic, which older dictionaries say pertains to the 'membrum virile erectum.'

But Sather stuck to her guns - until she saw a photo of the panels in situ, where she noted that below was the carved inscription "Erected By Jane K Sather 1909."

She quickly changed her tune, calling the panels "extremely indecent" and "disgusting." In fact, the joke had already spread like wildfire across the campus. She and her panels had become an overnight laughingstock (or sensation, depending on your point of view). Angry and humiliated, she ordered them removed: 'Immediately!'"

Yes! That is a funny anecdote about our iconic Sather Gate, to undergo a several months-long restoration starting this week.

Place the straws together over a third straw or pencil, balance a marble at the lower end, and gradually seperate the straws. Suprisingly, the marble will roll towards the upper end! How can the marble appear to defy gravity?
