This guy planned to write a violin concerto, but
he only finished the first movement. He is very
famous and admired, but very, very few know that
piece. Who is he?

Béla Bartók?
The heartbroken composer could not get over the break up with his then girlfriend to whom he had dedicated the theme of the first movement of that planned violin concerto, which was to have been his first.
"The folk influence on Bartók was cemented in 1907, when the composer traveled to Transylvania. Up to this time, he had concentrated on arrangements of tunes. His journey convinced him that he could base his original music on folk elements. This is reflected in his first violin concerto, unfinished, the first movement of which he recycled into his Two Portraits (1907). The movement is based on a theme, known as the "Geyer" motif, written as homage to a serious girlfriend, who dumped him – hence, the difficulty completing the concerto."

No.Bartok´s wasn´t published as a concerto's movement. The

How many attempts at violin concerti did Paganini attempt before publishing his better known pieces? Even the first piece he published as a "concerto" is just a single completed violin part of one movement with the orchestration loosely filled in. And what of Christian Sinding, did he ever really finish what could be called a concerto?
