How many seconds are in a millenium?

    Question #100509. Asked by runaway_drive. (Oct 25 08 2:11 PM)

    31,536,000,000

    1000 years x 365 days/year x 24 hours/day x 60 minutes/hour x 60 seconds/minute.

Of course, this calculation ignores the fact that the 'year' is no texactly 365 days, and that Leap year corrections will not completely compensate. Over this amount of time, the exact number of seconds is probably irrelevant, and could just as accurately )and perhaps more so, as the answer indicates that there is some uncertainty in the calculation provided) as "around 31.5 billion". The numbers used are only accurate to three significant figures (in particular, the figure for days in a year), so any more precision at the end of the calculation is not really appropriate.

According to the census bureau the US loses and gains population at this rate for a net gain of on person every 13 seconds. Every 8 seconds=1 birth. Every 12 seconds=1 death. Every 29 seconds=1 what?

Every few years, I hear about some new person who just broke the 100 meter record, from something like 10.01 seconds, to 9.89 seconds, to 9.77 seconds, to now 9.76 seconds. Is there a humanly possible limit to just how fast a human can run 100 meters, and could part of the record keeping be inaccurate due to the timing (of a hundredth of a second!)?
