Fascinating article. I would never have imagined (even in one of my wildest moments with a pen and pad) that foil pouches of mackerel fillets could be used as currency......

Exchange of services or products is also referred to as barter. "In the past, goods were exchanged on a one-to-one basis with the intent that the value of the goods traded was of relatively equal value. Prior to the establishment of currencies, barter was the most accepted form of commerce."

My son and I are trying to do some research for his homework and can't answer the question, "How is money supplied in the United States?" We know that the US mint literally makes the money, but where does the actual supply of money come from? I understand that our system runs on loans and interest, but again, where does the supply of the money for these come from?

I received an email from my friend in which a couple's daughter is in hospital and they needed money for the operation and they mentioned that AOL and ZDNET in Zimbabwe have agreed to help them and the only way that they can help is the receiver of the mail should forward it to at least three people and finally they will track how many people get it. My question is, how come these companies will gather money and try to help the couple, and how come opening a mail on the net informs them?

Though he's now best known as a writer, he made a living for years working in a branch of the civil service, and his job helped provide him with literary inspiration. Some people credit him with the invention of a certain useful, and later brightly-colored, convenience closely associated with his employment and with his country. Who was he, for what service did he work, and what is he said to have introduced?
