Sorry I got it wrong! "The Twelve Days of Christmas is probably the most misunderstood part of the church year among Christians who are not part of liturgical church traditions. Contrary to much popular belief, these are not the twelve days before Christmas, but in most of the Western Church are the twelve days from Christmas until the beginning of Epiphany (January 6th; the 12 days count from December 25th until January 5th)". http://www.crivoice.org/cy12days.html

The Eve bit originally was the evening of the Day - Christmas Day ran from dusk on the 24th to dusk on the 25th. Nowadays, we take the day change at midnight - which in practice means a day ends at bedtime (not too far from midnight in many cases) and starts when you get up. The bit between doesn't count. (Back then, the year didn't end on Dec 31 - it didn't even end at the end of a month! So the change of a day that early was OK.) With this change, Christmas Eve became a Day rather than just being an evening.

The Twelve Days of Christmas, and the associated evenings of those twelve days (Twelve-tide), are the festive days beginning the evening of Christmas Day (December 25) through the morning of Epiphany (January 6). The associated evenings of the twelve days begin on the evening before the specified day. Thus, the first night of Christmas is December 25–26, and Twelfth Night is January 5–6. This period is also known as Christmastide.
