I read in the news about a miracle berry that makes foods taste unusually sweeter than normal. What is the name of this berry, why does it make other foods seem sweeter, and what use is this unique factor in nature for the plant?

The Miracle Fruit plant (Synsepalum dulcificum) produces berries that, when eaten, cause bitter and sour foods (such as lemons and limes) consumed later to taste sweet. The berry, also known as Miracle Berry, Magic Berry, or Flavor Berry[2][3], was first documented by explorer Chevalier des Marchais[4] during a 1725 excursion to its native West Africa.

I tried miracle fruit while in Hawaii. It grows there like everything else does. You put a few in you mouth then wait about ten minutes . It made beer taste like cream soda. Fascinating but I prefer beer.
