On Christmas day in the trenches near Ypres the German troops began decorating their trench with candles etc. They then began singing Christmas carols in German. The Scottish troops in the British trnches responded with Christmas carols in English.

Eventually the troops met in No Mans Land, exchanged gifts and recited the 23rd Psalm.

May I have a more specific explanation for the following statement, "Earth's crust is extremely thin in trenches, and the heat flow beneath the trenches is half that found in the abyssal plain, implying that heat is consumed in trenches"?

I've read that the 1914 Christmas truce on the Western Front started with the Germans singing "Stille Nacht" (Silent Night) across No Man's Land. What did the British sing in return?

On some American Bandstand shows from the mid-to-late 1970s, they'd come back from break after whoever had 'performed' live, and Dick Clark would do a 10 to 15 second tease for whatever was coming up in the second half, and then the camera would pan across the audience, who'd all be clapping and swaying to the same song. It's a funky-synth instrumental song I've heard maybe 3 times on the radio, but I've never heard the artist/title announced. Anyone know this?
