What is the proper comma usage for the sentence 'I like candy but it is fattening?'

The sentence does not need a comma. But a comma may be added as follows:
'I like candy, but it is fattening'

Continuing with the previous answer:
Two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, 'but', or, yet, so) may or may not be separated by commas, depending on preferred style, or sometimes a desire to overcome ambiguity.
