In 2007 it was the Tower of London with over 2 million paying visitors. Followed by St. Pauls Cathedral and Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach.

Ten pounds to visit a cathedral. Wow! Historic churches I've toured in the US have a discreet request for donations; don't think I've ever bought a ticket to visit a church.

Apparently, one gets into the "pleasure beach" for free, but then pays for each ride or attraction.

A few years ago, I read a children's fiction book with a similar theme, except that 'the village' was a tourist attraction, and a girl escapes to find medicine for her mother. Can anyone help me find what book this was, and also say whether anywhere in the world people live purposely in the past, but not as a tourist attraction?
