It seems that this Hungarian composer wrote two violin concertos, but only the first has been published, and it's one of the most beautiful, romantic concertos of the 19th century. Milstein's recording is already legendary. Who was this guy?

    Karl Goldmark

His Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 28, was once his most frequently played piece. The concerto had its premiere in Bremen in 1877, initially enjoyed great popularity and then slid into obscurity. A very romantic work, it has a Magyar march in the first movement and passages reminiscent of Dvořák and Mendelssohn in the second and third movements. It has started to re-enter the repertoire, through recordings by such soloists as Itzhak Perlman. He wrote a second violin concerto, but it was never published.

Karl Goldmark (1830-1915) is recalled for only a handful of works, like his The Queen of Sheba opera and the underperformed Rustic Wedding Symphony. His Violin Concerto used to be championed by Nathan Milstein.

Romantic French composer (1849-1895) who wrote symphonic, chamber, operas and concertos, but today he's remembered only for a single "Berceuse" from his best opera. A pity because he was a great melodist, and his violin concertos are really lovely. Who was this short lived composer?

A 19th century Hungarian composer, who did several operas, symphonic works, very fine chamber, but today is foremost remembered for his only published violin concerto, one of the most beautiful romantic pieces ever written. However not many recordings exist. Do you know who he was?

An unjustly neglected German composer, pianist and teacher (1817-1993), Mendelssohn's pupil, friend of Schumann, who praised his works. He wrote two symphonies, two violin concertos and many very fine chamber instrumental works, in the best tradition of 19th century and IMO is as good as any. In particular, his string quartets, quintets and sextets are some of the best romantic chamber. Do you know him?
