Why did Mary Shelley revise Frankenstein in 1831 to change the character Elizabeth from a cousin of Victor to an apoted Italian orphan?

    Question #101095. Asked by jonsmith1963. (Nov 18 08 11:27 AM)

One view is that Shelley changed Elizabeth's relationship to Victor in order to avoid allegations of incest. The other prevalent view is that "When Elizabeth becomes a non-relative, the people whom the monster kills and against whom Victor rebels are mostly not Victor's relatives."
