Who is the famous character from French history whose name occurs as the name of a town in Michigan, Missouri, North Dakota and Ohio, and with the addition of -ville, also in Louisiana?

    Question #101188. Asked by flem-ish. (Nov 21 08 6:07 PM)

    JaneofGaunt

I would say the Marquis de Lafayette; he appears to have quite a number of places named after him in the U.S. The link is about him, not the places....

I found a Lafayette in Louisiana but not a Lafayetteville.
There is of course Fayetteville in Pennsylvania. The Frenchman I am looking for never set foot on American soil, but still played an indirect role in the history of the growth of the USA.

There are many other "Napoleon" place names in the U.S.A.
