What is the most populated city in Oceania outside of Australia and New Zealand?

Question #101338. Asked by author. (Nov 29 08 6:09 AM)

There are varying lists of which countries (or portions thereof) are included in "Oceania." Depending on whether portions of Indonesia and/or Hawaii are included, the answer would be:

    Makasar, Indonesia
    Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, or
    Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

(They are listed in descending order of population.)

You are right about the problems in defining Oceania. But some sources would define the island of New Guinea, including the state of Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian part, Irian Jaya, as a part of Oceania. Hawaii is also a question of definition.

Makasar is in Sulawesi (Celebes) island, and I don't think it qualifies as a city in Oceania. The largest city in the Indonesian part of New Guinea (Irian Jaya), Jayapura, is smaller than Honolulu. So maybe Honolulu is a better answer.
