    What are state senators and I thought there were only two senators per state?

    		Each U.S state is represented by two senators, rather than basing the number of senators on population. This ensures equal representation of each state in the Senate.

    The United States Senate is the upper house of the bicameral United States Congress, the lower house being the House of Representatives.

    		Each state has a state government with a State Senate and House, Govenor, and State Supreme Court. Each state also has its own state constitution and capital.

    Zbeckabee's talking about the U.S. senators. Each of the 50 states sends two senators to Washington, D.C. to represent it in the federal government.

    Star_gazer's talking about STATE senators and describing the STATE government. Each state runs its own government according to its own constitution. My state has 20 senators and yours, if you're "really in California," :-) has 40.
