I can't attest to this being attributed to G. Lucas specifically but, If you look carefully in the senate chamber (in Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace) you will see members of ET's species.
In posters for ET: the extra-terrestrial his home is stated as being 300 million light-years away. That makes the Star wars galaxy 300 million light-years 2,838,240,000,000,000,000,000 or almost 3000 billion billion kilometres) away from Earth.
