Are an espada and an estoque the same tools?

    Question #101668. Asked by flem-ish. (Dec 13 08 3:01 AM)

They are both a type of sword. The link below has the translation for espada but not estoque which is a rapier according to Cassell's Concise Spanish to English dictionary.

An estoque is a curved sword used for killing in bullfights. Espada is a term for a sword, and also for a matador.

A varient on estoque is tuck - a sword for thrusting through gaps in a suit of armour.
It is 1 of the many suggestions for part of the origin of the phrase 'nip and tuck' - which predates modern plastic surgery by a long time.

Here's a reference for tnrees's "tuck," but I've been unable to find any relationship with "nip and tuck."

"The French estoc or English "tuck" was a variation of the longsword focused intensely on fighting against mail or plate armour..... Estoc is French, meaning thrust or point. Tuck is the English version of the word."
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estoc

According to this article, an estoque has no cutting edge but only a sharp point. It's common knowledge that a sword has one or two long cutting edges.
