The seeds for grass come from grass flowers-they plump up at the base of the flowers as they mature. The flowers of lawn grass grow in a tassel that looks like a straggly sheaf of wheat. That's no surprise, since wheat is a type of grass itself.
Lawn grass doesn't usually form seeds unless it grows more than a few inches high-so mowing the lawn makes grass flowers pretty scarce. If you let the grass grow, though, it starts looking downright "wheatie."
