How many muscles move when a human being smiles and frowns?

Question #101886. Asked by armindasantana. (Dec 24 08 3:03 PM)

In addition to the answers already posted for questions 2802 and 95043, I would add that granted all facial muscles are intact and working bilaterally (barring a facial palsy on one side of the face, for instance), the number of muscles involved in smiling and frowning could vary from 4 to 12 for smiling and 11 for frowning. However, this may be impossible to truly determine as there are great variations in smiles -- the true smile, fake smile, slight smile, the smile from behind -- as enumerated in this source below.

A similarly high number of permutations of involved muscles could account for different frowns.
