Crackers is correct. The first lawn mower was invented by Edwin Budding of Stroud, Gloucestershire, who on May 18 1830 signed an agreement with John Ferrabee of the Phoenix Iron Works, Thrupp for the manufacture of 'machinery for the purpose of cropping or shearing the vegetable surface of lawns'. The first recorded customer was Mr Curtis, the head gardener of Regent's Park Zoo, London.
