In terms of a skyscraper--a building in which people actually work and live--the tallest skyscraper in the world in 1975 was Sears Tower, which surpassed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York in 1973. It remains the tallest skyscraper in North America, although it has been surpassed on a global scale by other structures.
CN Tower is the tallest freestanding structure in North America and was tallest freestanding structure in the world from 1976 to 2007, when Burj Dubai (still under construction) surpassed it. CN Tower not considered to be a skyscraper in the classic sense.
