The answer is Vodka! I did a search yesterday to find out how to properly clean my garnet ring and was extremely surprised to find vodka listed as a cleaning solution. Unfortunately, I did not write down the Internet cite but it was a jeweler's Web page.

Clean your diamond jewelry once every six to eight weeks. Taking your diamonds to a professional cleaner will guarantee the best results, but it isn't always the most practical or cost effective solution. Diamond jewelry can also be cleaned at home with the help of a soft toothbrush and a warm bowl of mild liquid detergent (you can also use a brand name jewelry cleaner). Once you've finished cleaning, rinse well and dry with a soft cotton cloth. Another tried-and-tested technique is to soak your 'rocks' in vodka for a short time.

Most gold or platinum jewelry can be cleaned in warm soapy water, detergent is equally good. It can be gently brushed if necessary using an old tooth brush especially to remove debris behind the stones. It is better to avoid cleaning agents containing abrasives, including toothpaste. Some people swear by gin. All alcohol will dissolve grease, but this is a waste of good gin.

I always clean my 18 carat gold jewelry and diamonds in 3% Hydrogen Peroxide. It is safe and makes them sparkle so well.
