How does saving plastic grocery bags to be recycled help the environment?

Plastic bags are take many years to decompose. Reducing the incredible volume of plastic bags disposed of each year reduces the volume of landfill they occupy. Also, 'feral' plastic bags can cause serious problems for wildlife - birds and fish can easily get their heads stuck in the loops formed by the handles. Reusing them first is important - taking a fresh bag and using it once before recycling is better than throwing it away. Using it two or three times saves even more energy and material. If you're going to the supermarket by car (or bike, even), you'll have spave ready for the shopping. You can take bags with you in that space. Obvious?
