What was a "cordon bleu" before it became a culinary term referring to either a chef or to a particular recipe?

    Question #102203. Asked by flem-ish. (Jan 08 09 3:03 PM)

French for 'blue ribbon'. The Cordon Bleu was the highest order of chivalry under the Bourbon kings. It has since been used for other first-class distinctions. The term has migrated into the language as a figurative acclamation rather than actual decoration for high quality, especially for chefs. (www.phrases.org.uk/meanings)
