OK, GN and Baloo--did you figure it out, or did you get the answers back?
How about, among many possible choices, penthouse, hexagram, octopus, etc.?
I hesitate to give the answer so others can think it through....hmm....
Just wondering about the definition of "brainteaser," though.
brainĀ·teasĀ·er
Function:noun
Date:1923
: something (as a puzzle) that demands mental effort and acuity for its solution

By that definition, almost every single at FT's a brainteaser!
But this one--I mean, it could have been methadone, ethnology, propaganda, and butter...
Not that I'm complaining--I LIKE brainteasers!
And, this serves as a clue for some who may be teasing their brains about it even as I type.

Uh, Duh!!!
Are these the "anes?"
Methane, Ethane, Propane and Butane?
Pentane comes next.
Each prefix continues to change, thus representing the number of carbon atoms.
e.g. Hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, decane.

Yep, we got the answers. Anything starting with pent- would do. Both of us were kicking ourselves. We use bottled gas for camping - butane in the warmer weather and propane in the winter. (I don't count it as a brainteaser - you've got to know the -anes to get it. Brainteasers can be worked out from what's given, usually.)
