Global warming. Not just the lower atmosphere but also the oceans have experienced an increase in their average temperatures. For the past fifty years, carbon dioxide emissions have increased from continuing industrialization, resulting in a "greenhouse effect" which is projected to continue and worsen until checked. This conclusion has been well established by the scientic community.
Global warming is the biggest political, economic and social problem facing our species. For some possible solutions, see the National Geographic article.
