What is the meaning of the idiom 'Raining cats and dogs?'

Question #102440. Asked by jmangeli. (Jan 19 09 12:48 AM)

    Essentially it means ‘raining heavily’.

It probably stemmed back to seventeenth century England. During heavy downpours it was not unusual to see dead cats and/or dogs being swept past by run-off.
