    		The Danish West Indies consisted of St Thomas, St John and St Croix in the Virgin Islands and were sold to the U.S. in 1917.

    		Negotiations were under way for the US to purchase the Danish Virgin Islands in 1867, but were dropped aftet first a hurricane and a month later an earthquake and tsunami totally devastated the islands. It was another fifty years before the sale actually took place.
