    Who was the only American ever held as a prisoner in The Tower of London?

    Henry Laurens, a man from South Carolina who was a delegate to the Continental Congress and hence prominent in the American Revolution.

    He was captured en route to Holland as a diplomat and held in the Tower of London for over a year. He was released New Year's Eve 1781.
