Worth at least half a million dollars, the unknown works of an artist who died a century ago have recently been placed on the market. They are valuable not primarily for their pleasing aesthetics, but for the history they document. Rush to tell me who the artist was and what he documented.

Would it be Martin Ramirez, who died in 1963? His last works were of trains, riders, and landscapes, etc., and were on show at the American Folk Art Museum:-

    No, sorry, it wouldn't be.

Ramirez's work is interesting, and he happened to do it very near the place the man to whom I refer did his.

Charles Gillespie's California Gold Rush art. Historians say the collection is valuable primarily because it captures California's seminal event: James Marshall's 1848 discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma. The highlights are sketches and oil paintings of Sutter's Mill and Marshall himself, subjects that historians say were rarely captured by artists or photographers then.

    Verbonica struck gold!

Gillespie made perhaps the only surviving sketches of Marshall when he was young.
