What are Alpacas commonly mistaken as?

    Question #103045. Asked by Indy_B. (Feb 15 09 7:16 PM)

    Llamas.

The Alpaca is a member of the camelid family. They come from South America and are raised for their luxurious fleece. They are on average around 36" at the withers and weigh around 150 pounds. They are a smaller cousin to the llama (which they are commonly mistaken to be). They are curious and cautious all at the same time. They are very peaceful and make this soft humming sound when they communicate with each other.

The Alpaca is very often mistaken for a Llama. A very quick way to identify the two is that the Llama is almost the size of a horse and has curled ears (referred to as Banana Ears).

Alpaca are descended from a wild vicuna ancestor while the domesticated llama is descended from a wild guanaco ancestor, though at this point there has been a considerable amount of hybridization between the two species.

Differentiating characteristics between llamas and alpacas include the llama's larger size and longer head.
