When calculating time spans, particularly when the events occur at distinctly different times of the year, it is not very accurate to just consider the year part of the date. For example, the time lapse between Christmas 2008 and New Year's Day 2009 is significantly less than a year. The calculation based on number of months is much more accurate. We could go as far as calculating the number of days (since not all months have the same number of days), but that might be getting a little ridiculous!
