He was chief clerk at State Department and was sent to negoiate peace treaty w/defeated Mexico in 1847. Was ordered to return and ignored that order and negotiated Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo-from The American Glossary

N.P.T. was famous for signing the Treaty of Guadaloupe Hidalgo on behalf of the USA. That treaty brought about the end of the Mexican-American war. Trist was at one stage Private Secretary to President Andrew Jackson, and married the grand-daughter of Thomas Jefferson.
