How did computer cookies get their name?

    Question #103424. Asked by 29CoveRoad. (Feb 28 09 6:44 PM)

The question may be misleading, but I'll try to answer anyway.

A "cookie" isn't necessarily a spy device. Cookies are bits of information that you receive from another computer on the net. The information should mean nothing to you. Instead it is used as a sort of identification code so that the sending computer can recognize you whenever you visit it (like here at FunTrivia!). The origin of the term is "Magic Cookie", a term used in UNIX programming to describe this procedure, which is in turn based on "Fortune Cookie", the chinese take-out desert (because it is also a sort of packet containing hidden information).
