Simply put, the awards take their name from the gramophone that adorns the award statue.
Instituted by the US-based National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), Grammy Awards were first given in the year 1958.The awards were earlier known as the Gramophone Awards due to its statuette which was a small, gilded gramophone.
Initially, only some portions of the award ceremony were telecast on television, the first telecast being on the NBC's 'Sunday Showcase' on November 29, 1959.
