Why do flocks of birds sometimes strike airplanes in flight?

    Question #103549. Asked by lilacmay4. (Mar 04 09 9:46 PM)

Bird strikes happen most often during takeoff or landing, or during low altitude flight near airports.

The animals most frequently involved in bird strikes are large birds with big populations. Particularly if planes are flying in their migratory path - the birds do not change their course. They follow an innate sense of where to be in the sky and to turn in the sky which is why they do not collide with each - I guess they think the planes are going to move in the same way

There is not much more info on why apart from them sharing the same airspace except for with jet engines when they are actually ingested into the engine by force.
