Which North American city was the first to get city status?

    Question #103737. Asked by david1975. (Mar 11 09 4:37 PM)

    DelGriffith

The oldest city in North America is St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada....established 1497 by John Cabot at Bonavista that is actually known and recorded. L'anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland was actually landed and settled by Vikings hundreds of years before that. Certainly makes geographical sense considering the recording explorers were travelling from Europe or at least East to West and the island of Newfoundland would be one of the first points encountered.

Prior to European contact there were many cities in North America. The city of Tenochtitlan, located near the site of present day Mexico City was established in the 12th century A.D. Its population is estimated to have been between 100,000 and 200,000.

The Mayans had cities between 250 and 900 A.D. The Olmec civilization was even earlier, between 1250 B.C. and 400 B.C.
