What are the three most well-known Czech beers?

Question #103814. Asked by author. (Mar 13 09 7:31 PM)

Czechs drink mostly Czech beers. In order of popularity: Pilsner Urquell, Gambrinus, Radegast, Velkopopovicky Kozel, and then a long list of beers brewed in the smaller regional breweries. A wide range of beers is available, with more than 80 breweries in the Czech Republic.

Globally, I suspect it would depend on where one is located, however:

    Pilsner Urquell
A pale lager brewed in the town of Plzen and exported worldwide, Pilsner Urquell is the best known Czech beer.

    Budvar
Brewed in Ceske Budejovice, Budvar is the beer that inspired the American Budweiser. Try it at the Budvar Bar or any pub in Prague.

    Staropramen
Staropramen is the second biggest producer of beer in the Czech Republic, and its beers deserve their great reputation.

    Gambrinus
A favorite with Czech locals, this beer is brewed in Plzen. Gambrinus pale lager has a gold color and is full-bodied and bitter.

Which is considered more popular worldwide, stout beers or lager beers?

A hard one. There was a Czech virtuoso violinist (1913-1966), one of the best of the Czech violin school, who made between 1956-1958 a recording of the complete Paganini's 24 caprices. It was one of the best of that work, but very few know it, and the man was forgotten except to violin or Paganini experts. Do you know who he was?

Czech violinist, professor, mentor and composer (1883-1950). He left many short romantic pieces for the violin, seldom played outside his country. There's an international violin contest with his name. Foremost Czech virtuoso was his pupil. Who was this guy?
