Pneumonia can be viral or bacterial. The most common bacteria to cause pneumonia is pneumococcus. It is transmitted from person to person via droplets so hand hygeine is very important in the prevention. Certain conditions make people more likely to develop pneumonia such as those with HIV/AIDS, COPD, cystic fibrosis, elderly.
It is usually treatable with antibiotics although some may need to be hospitalized and in the elderly or those with prior lung or heart disease it can be very serious.
