It all depends on your point of view. If you subscribe to the theory of evolution you would believe the egg was laid by a close relative of the chicken from which chickens became chickens. If you believe the theory of creation than you believe God created the chicken. So if you believe in evolution then the egg came first. If you believe in creation then the chicken came first.

The reptilian egg certainly pre-dates any chicken.

Since the question doesn't mention "chicken egg" it is quite obvious the answer is egg. We all are aware dinosaurs hatched from eggs long before there were chickens.

I'm a creationist, but if I were an evolutionist I would probably try to defend the egg, find out why! Read my article "Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg?" at messianicideas.com
