Looks like I made a mess of this question, I didn't realise either of these two were still operational.

The Royal Australian Air Force still uses the F-111 (C and G variants), due to be replaced along with the aging F/A18 by the JSF.

What was the only military aircraft to see service as both a piston engined and jet powered fighter?

I was born in the second half of the 19th century. In my early life I spent a short time as a writer, but events put an end to that. I enjoyed life as an artist, being an accomplished painter. Later I become involved in trade and worked on social reform to improve the prison system. I developed an interest in aviation and flew aircraft. I tried to get elected to parliment but was defeated. During the 1930s many saw me as a right wing extremist. I saw active service in World War II. I returned to writing for a few years and was rewarded for my efforts. I spent some time in the United States, and died in the second half of the 20th century. Who am I?
