"Charles II famously fathered numerous illegitimate children, of whom he acknowledged fourteen. His mistresses included Lucy Walter (2 children), Moll Davis (1) , Nell Gwyne (2), Louise de Keroualle (1), Barbara Villiers (6), Elizabeth Killigrew (1), Catherine Pegg (1), Frances Stuart (became the face of Britannia on coins), and at least five others."

The above coin is similar in design to an 18th century US coin design.

19th Century for the seated Liberty. Here's the first Britannia (not counting the coins of Hadrian et al, which weren't modelled by anyone we know) on a farthing of 1672. Chards doubt that the model was Charles's mistress, and say they can't find any direct evidence for it. Samuel Pepys refers to it, but that's really as reliable as a modern blog when you think about it. OK if there's nothing better. http://24carat.co.uk/britanniaframe.html
Why does Liberty look so much like Britannia? Recycling, plagiarism - or simply that one woman wearing a lot of frothy gown and sitting on a shield looks very much like another. By the time the engraving and striking's done, it's hard to tell who they look like.
