In my research, I have not found the number of Marvin Gaye's practice jersey. In fact, a search on the official website for the Detroit Lions yielded no information at all about Gaye. But for those interested in the story, here's the scoop.
Marvin Gaye fell into a deep depression after the death of his duet partner, Tammi Terrell, from a brain tumor in March of 1970. (Terrell had collapsed on stage the previous October, in Gaye's arms, and was just 24 at the time of her death.) He did not record or perform in public sometime after Terrell's death, but he did try out for the Lions. He didn't make the team, but he did become friends with Hall-of-Fame defensive back Lem Barney and running back Mel Farr. Barney and Farr sang backup for Gaye on his legendary hit "What's Going On" in 1971.
