The welder Alex Owens ran through a hall of statues like a maniac probably unaware of the tongue depicted on the ceiling. What tongue?

Are you looking for The Tongue of the Cherokee?
Portions of the movie "Flashdance" were filmed in the Hall of Sculpture at the Carnegie Museum of Art in 1983.

"For the 1988 Carnegie International, the museum's triennial exhibition of contemporary art, the German artist Lothar Baumgarten (b. 1944) produced The Tongue of the Cherokee for the Hall's skylight ceiling. This work of art presents the Cherokee alphabet, which was formulated in the early nineteenth century. Just as the choice of a Greek-inspired design for the Hall of Sculpture reflects the importance of that ancient culture to American politics, so the Cherokee alphabet serves as a reminder of the presence in this country of Native Americans and recognizes their role in American history."

Some time discrepancy there though.

You are absolutely right gonnzo! The ceiling would not have been there during the filming of "Flashdance". The music video below shows the Hall of Sculpture at the CMOA and it provides a brief glimpse of the ceiling, sans Cherokee alphabet. I have looked at it many times when I was living in those parts and I just assumed that the ceiling was there forever. Great catch gonnzo and a very nice try gentlegiant17.
