Edward, Prince of Wales, was the eldest son of King Edward III and Philippa of Hainault, and was born at Woodstock on June 15, 1330. He was known as the Black Prince.
Edward accompanied his father on a fruitless mission in France and "returned to Bordeaux with the seeds of a malady which never quitted him". In his day, people called it a 'wasting illness', but it was likely cancer.

The Black Prince was Edward, eldest son of England's Edward III and father of Richard II. It's unclear where his name comes from; perhaps his armor, perhaps his coat of arms, or perhaps his reputation among the French (he fought many military campaigns in the Hundred Years' War).
He died after a long illness in 1376. It isn't known what disease this was; it's been theorized that it might have been cancer, or possibly a disease (syphilis? dysentery?) picked up during his military campaigns in Spain.
